Dear Traveller,
Why May’s the perfect time to visit Russia
While we would say that a visit to Russia is great at any time of year, we especially like May. The weather’s warming up nicely and there are lots of events on the Russian social calendar.
Russia commemorates Victory Day on May 9th. We remember those who paid the ultimate price defending their homeland from the attack by Nazi Germany. There’s a huge parade in Moscow, when Red Square is filled with tanks and military personnel. That evening there’s a thrilling firework display which lights up the night sky over the capital. If you’re planning to be in Russia in late spring, we’d definitely recommend making sure you time your visit to Moscow to coincide with this spectacle.
May also sees the fourth inauguration of President Vladimir Putin. Russia held presidential elections in March, with Putin receiving a resounding vote of confidence when 76% of the electorate backed him as their candidate of choice to lead the country. As tradition dictates, the ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 7th in the Hall of the Order of St Andrew of the Grand Kremlin Palace. Putin commences his six year term on that date and will take the presidential oath of office. The capital is likely to be busy during this historic moment.
Of course, business goes on as normal when it comes to Russia’s varied and interesting sightseeing. A visit to St Petersburg is the perfect complement to your time in Moscow. Its elegant streets and canals are a pleasure to stroll along on a warm spring day or mild evening. Sunset is getting later, meaning there’s plenty of time for sightseeing. Or perhaps take a trip on the Trans-Siberian. Mild, sunny spring days are ideal for a trip to Siberia before the heat of midsummer.
Whatever your plans, if you would like us to help make sure your trip runs smoothly, we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Will Cosmonautics Day inspire you to visit Star City?
The very first manned space flight took place on 12th April 1961. Why does Russia celebrate Easter at a different time?
