Dear Traveller,
Celebrate Russia Day with us!
12th June is Russia Day, celebrated annually since 1992 to mark the fall of the Soviet Union. It’s a public holiday in the country and one gaining in popularity despite its relatively recent inception. Many people will take the day off work and you’ll find that banks, public offices and schools are closed. Some people are less enthusiastic, associating the day with the economic downturn and uncertainty which were a side effect of the political changes. So it’s controversial, but important.
At the beginning, it was known as Russia’s Independence Day, but as there hadn’t been a conquering power to gain independence from, some felt this name wasn’t a good fit. The epithet Independence Day was officially dropped in 2002 and Russia Day adopted instead. Most Russian cities stage special events to mark the occasion, with the biggest and best taking place in Moscow. Red Square hosts a big parade and there are music concerts, festivals and fireworks displays too. Most cities will publish this year’s event schedule soon, but in the past there has been a procession featuring a giant wooden ruble coin in Tomsk, a kilometre-long human tricolour flag parading through the streets of Krasnoyarsk and in Volgograd, a massive human map of Russia created by its very well coordinated residents.
It’s also a day of recognition. In the UK we have the New Year’s Honours list and the like, and on Russia Day worthy Russians will be given awards that acknowledge their contribution in the field of art, science and humanitarian work. These presentations, together with a Presidential address, are televised nationwide.
If you’re planning to be in Russia on that date, then keep an eye out for event posters or talk to your hotel concierge about what’s happening nearby. Joining the locals for their celebrations will be a memorable part of your trip for sure. If you can’t be there in person, why not devote a little time to reading our blogs and learning about one of the world’s most fascinating countries. If you’re tempted to visit, our friendly staff are just a phone call or email away and will be happy to help turn your ideas into reality.
С днем России!
