Dear Traveller,
International travel is on the horizon once again – where will you go?
Virtual travel is all very well if that’s the only thing you can safely do, but there’s nothing like the real thing. We are aware that many of you are keen to make plans for future travels and we are keeping a close eye on any changes that will alter the situation in the countries where we operate.

Visit Georgia - a country of natural beauty and legendary hospitality
Though Russia has made no announcement as yet about its borders reopening, first out of the starting blocks is Georgia. This Caucasus nation implemented lockdown measures quickly and effectively. As of mid-May it had reported less than 700 cases and just 12 deaths from COVID-19 (source: Worldometer) in a country with a population of 3.7 million.
The Georgian government stated in mid-May its intentions to restart domestic tourism on June 15th. Considerable measures have been put in place to ensure hotels, restaurants, transportation and guides comply with new safety standards introduced to mitigate the risks of COVID-19. Such measures have already been successful in managing returning Georgian nationals to keep the number of cases low within the country.
It is hoped that from July 1st, international tourism will be able to resume. This will be a gradual process. The Georgian National Tourism Administration confirmed that the first steps will be the creation of a safe corridor on land borders with neighbours such as Armenia. The Georgian government are initiating bilateral negotiations with other countries, and the decisions arising from those talks will be announced as they are made.
Visitors from the UK and other European nations should not expect to visit as early as July 2020; among the other hurdles to be overcome is the FCO freeze on overseas travel, as unless this is lifted your insurance will not be valid. However, it does seem very likely that Georgia will be one of the first countries to actively encourage international tourist arrivals. One initiative that’s especially good news for visitors is the plan to encourage tourism in Special Green Tourist Zones; these are to be resorts that have not previously experienced any Coronavirus cases.
Reinforcing Georgia’s position as a safe destination for visitors is the confirmation that the 112th Session of the UNWTO Executive Council will take place in Georgia, perhaps as early as September 2020, further demonstrating confidence that the country can safely handle incoming visitors. That’s good news if you are thinking about a future Georgian city break or tour.
